A STICKY WICKET

FREAK CRICKET EPISODES BATSMAN RAN HIMSELF OUT (Received 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. There were several unusual incidents in a recent cricket match in the lower Richmond competition. Firstly, a delivery from a bowler hit the wicket hard and failed to dislodge the bail. The umpire, however, gave the batsman out after investigation disclosed that the bail had been fixed 1 in place with chewing gum, as it had previously been blown off by the gusty winds. Secondly, although the sun was shining, there was an appeal against the light, as the combination of the sun’s rays and the high trajectory of the bowler made it impossible to see the ball at one end of the wicket until it had practically landed, whereas, at the other end, the light was perfect. The difficulty was overcome by changing the bowler, and putting on a man employing low trajectories. Thirdly, a batsman striving to drive a full pitched ball snicked’ it to the wicket-keeper’s pads, from which it rebounded down the wicket. The batsman, in endeavouring to regain the crease, accidentally hit the ball with his bat. and it rolled into the wicket while he was still out of his grounds. He was given run out.
