A MATRIMONIAL AGENCY
DUNEDIN'S MAYOR AND ENGLISH GIRL'S LETTER I Special to '‘Northern Advocate ”1 DUNEDIN, This Day. Last week reference made in the “Northern Advocate” to a letter received by the Mayor of Dunedin, the Rev.- E. T. Cox, from a girl in London, .asking if he could put her in touch with a man in New Zealand who would marry her and give a home to her mother. “If there is any man in New Zealand (I hear they are both kind and chivalrous), who will pay our fares and take care of my mother, I would do my best to be a grateful and loving wife to him. I do not mind living in an isolated spot, and I do not mind how old the man is, or whether he is a bachelor or a widower,” the letter ran.
Possibly some North Auckland men read this letter when it was published last week, for the Mayor has received several letters from young men in the North, who consider themselves eligible, and who wish to communicate with her. The Mayor’s office yesterday morning resembled a matrimonial agency, Mr Cox being occupied for some time in opening letters, which all proved to be replies to the girl’s appeal for a husband. It has been noted that most of the men who have answered her letter are young and in a good financial position.
