REMARKABLY KEEN COMPETITION PRICES INCREASE ON DECEMBER OFFERING [Per Press Association. — Copyright.] WELLINGTON, This Day. •REMARKABLY KEEN COMPETITION FROM START TO FINISH, AND A VERY GOOD CLEARANCE OF A BIG, OFFERING WERE FEATURES OF THE SECOND WELLINGTON W r OOL SALE HELD YESTERDAY. THE TOTAL QUANTITY CATALOGUED WAS 30,450 BALES. The offering included some excellent Merinos, halfbreds and Romneys, and a large assortment of good crossbred, wools, light in condition, wellgrown and bright in appearance. Bradford Prominent. There was a full representative bench >of buyers. Bradford took a much more prominent part in the sale, while. German buyers assisted in giving a stimulus to the market. Some large orders were filled for Japan and the Continent and buying was also done for Canada, the United States and Australia. New Zealand mills were also operating on suitable lines. Bidding all through the sale was very keen, and at times strenuous, and the sale was put through in a little over six hours. Passings were very few. Actually 27,766 bales were sold at auction, and the passings numbered 2,333 bales, or slightly under 8 per cent of the total offering. Price Comparison. Comparing today’s-prices with those realised it the December sale, a leading firm’ of brokers reports:—Merinos unchanged; fine halfbreds, Id to Ud up;: medium halfbreds, Id to 2d up; crossbreds, from par to fd up; hogget wool, fine, Id down;, medium and coarse, unchanged; lamb, £d to |d up; bellies, pieces and locks, unchanged. Hogget wool was erratic. Lambs’ wool sold well under strong competition,. .one line making 12|d, and several others 12d to 12£d. ■The top price of the sale was 18d for four bales of Southdown “Wiwhaka” brand. A line of five bales of super halfbred hoggets, and another of six bales of super halfbred ewe made 161 d. The following was the range of prices:— December, January, 1935. 1936.

The record of wool sold in Sydney between July 1 and December 31 realised £11,015,171, which is £4,758,946 more* than for the corresponding months of 1934. This is partially due to the fact that sales were 156,446 bales more, but it is also caused by the improved price, the average obtained being 13.8 per lb, compared with 9.8 d 12 months previously.
