DEVELOPING EMPIRE BROADCASTS

BETTER TRANSMISSION PLANNED (Received noon.) LONDON, January 2. Discussing plans for developing Empire broadcasts. Sir Noel Ashbridge, chief engineer to the 8.8. C., says the new station to be established at Daventry will use 13 beams directed to various parts of the Empire. “After two years’ experimenting,” he said, “we have narrowed the beam which serves the various countries, in order to increase the signal strength. Although the new beam is not sharply defined, it will cover an arc of roughly 40 degrees, compared with 70 degrees formerly. This will necessitate using a greater number of transmissions to cover the same area. It is expected that the new station will be completed in 15 months. The Australian Associated Press is informed that reception, in Australia, consequently, will benefit, equally with other Dominions.
