CYCLING COUPLE

SEEING THE NORTH AWHEEL. THE PROPER WAY TO DO IT “It is not only the most pleasant form of travel, but it also allows one to become much more familiar with the country,” said Mr Gilpin, of Wellington, a bronzed visitor to Whangarei today. Mr Gilpin, together with his wife, is on a cycling tour of Northland. Last year they travelled awheel through Otago, and the previous Christmas found them cycling through the splendid scenery which Nelson offers. On the present excursion they left Auckland on New Year’s morning, so that they have made comfortable travelling time to date. Each carries a well-packed knapsack, filled with clothing, cameras and necessary paraphenalia of travel. They do not pitch a tent, but do things more comfortably, taking their meals and sleeping at hotels.

Both Mr and Mrs ' Gilpin scorn shorts, saying that bicycling is quite easy in normal clothing. They are delighted with Northland roads, which Mr Gilpin went so far as to describe as perfect. It is their intention to cycle up the east coast, and then via the Ninety Mile Beach to Pandora, returning by the west coast.
