ENGLISHMEN BAT WELL (Received 1.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The match -between the touring Marylebone Cricket team and an Australian XI began in cool weather yesterday, before an attendance of 4,170 people.' The Marylebone team is:—Holmes, Lyttelton, Baxter, Human, Powell, Barber, Parks, Langridge, Sims, Smith, Hardstaff, and Mitchell-Innes, ’ twelfth man.
A partnership of 150 runs by Hard-, staff and Langridge saved Marylebone from a possible- rout after the English star batsmen had succumbed to the good bowling of Ebeling and Chiivers. Hardstaff played' a flawless, fighting knock. His century was made in 183 minutes, and included nine boundaries. Practically all his runs were made in front of the wicket, his cover and straight drives being magnificent. Langridge, who was dropped before he had scored, flayed a correct steady innings, and batted for 145 minutes. The bowling was accurate throughout the day, but the fielding of the Australians was atrocious, no fewer than seven easy catches being dropped. MARYLEBONE. —First Innings. Parks.
