ONLY EIGHTEEN DAYS

CHRISTMAS IS NEAR THE “SHOP EARLY” PROBLEM DEMAND FOR HOLIDAY ACCOMMODATION. Christmas is only 18 days away. Many Whangarei shops haye already introduced suitable decorations into their windows, and special novelties for gifts have been placed on view. Whether these attractive inducements will cause people to shop early and avoid the rush remains to be seen. If past years are any indication, it is doubtful whether buyers of presents will take the hint. Very few people, experience has shown, find any pleasure in buy-

ing the necessary box of cigars for

Uncle Joe and a tie for Robert,

two or even one week before the

great festival. Christmas Eve is usually the time when the purchases are made, and hurried decisions arrived at as to what tb

buy. Primary schools are due to break up for the summer holidays on De-, cember 20, and the Whangarei High School a week earlier. Br,eak-up ceremonies are being arranged, and several Christmas parties for children are being organised. There has been a keen demand for beach cottages, and the majority of these summer residences at the various resorts in the vicinity of Whangarei have been booked for January and February. Some were/booked three or four months ago, and competition has been keen. A special Christmas road report is being prepared by the Northern patrol of the A.A., and"will be issued probably next week for'the benefit of the many motorists who will be touring, in lieu of a holiday at a fixed place. The indications are that there will be a heavy influx of southern motorists. Holiday resorts in the Far North will be well patronised.
