TOWN BOARD MEETING CMR. HANSELL RESIGNS BIG BUDGET OF NEWS. , At the monthly meeting of the Hikurangi Town Board on Tuesday night, the chairman,’ Mr R. Nesbitt, presided over Cmrs. N. Gibson, S. M. Pearson, D. Cochrane, E. W. Rickard and the town clerk, Mr C. E, O’Gall^ghan.
The question of the housing survey in the town was deferred until next meeting on the motion of the chairman. It was decided that all men employed under the No. 5 scheme on December 7 should be entitled for the two weeks up till Christmas to one week’s bonus., The resignation of Cmr. J. W. Hansel! as a member of the board was accepted and it was resolved to hold over the extraordinary election to fill the vacancy until after the holidays. Cmr. Hansell had had .leave of absence for several months and now he was living in Auckland. "Wallace Supplies applied for a crossing into their shop. The application was granted, subject to the approval of the works committee.
Also subject to their approval and in pursuance of the board’s by-laws and the sanitary inspector’s report, A. Cadman was given permission to build a milking shed. The Auditor-General forwarded his certificate and a favourable report on the 1934-35 balance-sheet, regarding which the chairman said great credit was due to the clerk as each year a favourable report was given and the balance-sheet had never yet been tagged. Accounts for £706 12s and current accounts, £l5O 13s 4d, were confirmed on the motion of Cmr. Cochrane, seconded by Cmr. Gibson, THANKSGIVING Mr Gordon Hanna, the minister, and the ladies of the guild were the tenderers of a final social on Tuesday night to the combined committees who had successfully conducted the recent queen carnival in aid of the funds of the Anglican Church. It was a pleasant evening, and, at the conclusion of the sit-down tea, Mr Hanna praised the good work done by the committees. Mr Aldwyn Williams,
a former minister, also said a few words.
Items were given by the male quartette (Messrs N. Campbell, Hanna and Capt. Penhall and Lt. Ponninghouse of the Salvation Army); song, Mr? Langford; cornet solo, Lt, Ponninghouse; song, Miss Annie Mcllroy; recitation, Mrs Spark; pianoforte solos, Miss Teesdale. A competition* for making stories out of song titles was won by Mr Eric Pearson, and Mr A. Williams captured the award for a Shakespeare wedding. UNEMPLOYED BAZAAR ■ —* — A successful bazaar in aid of the Women’s Unemployment Committee was held in Purdy’s Hall The sum of £3O 15s 4d was raised, and, while not as much as anticipated, it will provide relief during Christ-mas-tide. ,
The president, Mrs J. Atkinson, and the secretary, Mrs J. Puncheon, both said a few words following which the former called upon Mr R. Nesbitt, chairman of the Town Board, and Mrs Nesbitt to declare the bazaar open. Stallholders were: Mesdames Puncheon and Bravery (drapery), Mesdames Atkinson and Turnbull (surplus), Mesdames Laird, Sissons and Queripel (cake), Mesdames Baugh and Wetherall (sweets), Mesdames Ware and Mulligan (toys). Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Coulston, Motley and Gallan. A competition for a rug was won by Mrsßaisbeck. Others fortunate in this respect were Miss Rita Graham and Miss A. Stockley (cushions), Mrs Gibson (two cakes), Mrs Garvin (duck and drake), and Mrs S, Smith (dress). The donation of goods by storekeepers was much appreciated and thanks were forthcoming from the president. Mr N. Saul’s orchestra provided music for an enjoyable dance in the evening. LEAGUE CLUB’S SUCCESS Proof of the prowess of the Hikurangi Rugby League Club on the field of play was apparent at a dance conducted in Purdy’s Hall on Thursday night. The presentation of trophies won during the past season was made by Mr W. McKinlay, an executive member of the Northland Rugby League. The Mitchell Cup, symbol of premiership, will be held jointly with Takahiwai. ' As winners of the Cadman caps and the shield for the knock-out competition, the speaker congratulat-
ed Mr E. O’Callaghan and his thirteen (Hikurangi United), Much credit, he said, was due to the Meyer family for the way they had stuck to the side and to the help they had been to the game. Mr J. Petterson, secretary to the Northland Rugby League, was present on behalf of Whangarei clubs. A fair crowd enjoyed the dancing. Extras were contributed by Mr A. Crozier. Miss Gwen Gager and Mr T. Aldridge were the winners of the Monte Carlo waltz, and the spot waltz was annexed by Miss Visoovltch and Mr F. Viscovitch. DANCE SERIES END The wind-up to a series of very successful dances took place at the Criterion Theatre after the pictures on Saturday night. The attendance of a very large number of dancers made things go with a swing. The Monte Carlo went to Mr and Mrs Wetherall, and Mr N. Gibson and Miss P. McKegg were not to be caught in the Bob-down One Step. , HERE AND THERE
Master Rob Little, of Auckland, is staying with his grandparents, Mr and Mrs R, Davidson, George Street. Miss Claridge, also of Auckland, is the guest of her sister, Mrs J. Hamilton, King Street. Mrs Fox, of Westport, accompanied by her daughterrin-law, Mrs Fox, is visiting Mrs McKinlay senr., King Street.
Mrs J. Hamilton, Valley Road, left on Saturday for Hamilton, where her nephew is' ill in the Waikato- Hospital. Mrs Muir, Valley Road, has as a guest her daughter, Mrs Allen, of Napier, Mrs W. Meadows and Mrs C. Stockley junr. have gone to Whananaki for a week.
Miss Madge McCarthy has returned home after a short stay in Auckland. Mrs Melville Dick arrived from Auckland on Saturday to spend a holiday with her parents, Mrs J. Willetts, View Road.
Mr Frank Ingpen, away on his annual holidays, is visiting friends at Auckland, Pukekohe and Wellington.
Mr and Mrs E. Dobbs have returned from Otorohanga, Mr Dobbs having taken up a position at the Hikurangi Hotel.
Mr Aldwyn Williams, a student at the Trinity College, Auckland, passed through Hikurangi en route to Kaitaia, where he will spend holidays with his parents. He stayed in Hikurangi for a few days and was present at the social tendered by the church
to the combined committees who successfully ran the queen carnival.
Denis Jones fell from a cot recently, injuring himself slightly. He was taken to the Whangarei Hospital. Mrs W. Hall is back from the District Hospital where she has been undergoing treatment. Mr R. Richardson, brother of the bridegroom, came to the town from Papakura on Wednesday to attend the Richardson-Lowe wedding at Marua yesterday.
Another patient returned from the hospital is Mrs R. Sissons, who underwent an operation.
Mr G. Martin, who was in Auckland for an operation to the eye, is back again very much improved. Misses Olga Meyer and Jennie Little are leaving next week for Rotorua, where they have obtained work for the holidays.
Mr J. Fisher damaged his hand while working at a quarry at Waro. Mrs F. Frow, who went into hospital for an operation, is making steady progress. Two otheA inmates of the same institution, Messrs T, Dickson and W. Harris, are both reported to be doing well.
The many friends of Mr J. Pearson, who had not been out for some considerable time owing to ’ ill-health, were very pleased to see him down to vote.
Mr A. M. G. Ward, formerly postmaster at Hikurangi and now at Papatoetoe, has received notice of his promotion.
