PARLIAMENT BLOCK

COMPLETION PROS-

PECT

WILL COST £300,000

MR SAVAGE FAVOURS IT.

[/Special to "Northern Advocate”! WELLINGTON, This Day.

There is a possibility that the Labour Government will complete Parliament Building.

Answering a question this morning, following his return from an inter*view with. the Governor-General, Lord Galway, the Prime Ministerelect, Mr Savage, said the completion of Parliament Building was, in his opinion, long overdue, and, personally he would be in favour of demolishing the old wooden wing and erecting a new structure. He believed this idea would also appeal to Mr R. Semple, the new Minister of Public Works, who would be on the look-out for useful work of a public nature. On occasions of State, such as the advent of distinguished visitors from overseas, New Zealanders were not proud of the appearance of Parliament Building. The old wooden wing, which has long outlasted its usefulness is

an architectural eyesore. Plans for completion of the building on modem lines have long been available, the estimated cost being £300,000. However, it is likely that numerous alterations and fresh estimates will be necessary before anything is done.
