NEXT PARLIAMENT

PROBABLY IN FEBRUARY BUSY TIME AHEAD [Special to "Northern Advocate.”! WELLINGTON, This Day. It does look now as if there will be a Parliament next year. Probably the session will open about the middle of February. Yesterday the Prime Minister, Mr M. J. Savage, said that he was quite satisfied that the new Government did not require legislation to provide for increased benefits ,for the unemployed during the Christmas season. He had noted the, statement of' the outgoing Minister of Finance, Mr Coates, that, under commitments by the National Government, there would only be a small balance in the Unemployment Fund at the end of the financial year.

However, the Labour Government, at the moment, was not particularly concerned with the position of the funds some months hence; that could be investigated later on. It was of vital importance to see that the unemployed wtere decently provided for at Christmas, and that their hopes in the new administration should be realised.

There will be a very heavy legislative pi’ogramme when the House meets next year. The main points in the Labour Party’s policy will be turned into legislation as soon as possible. Mr Savage states that he will not use his big majority to rush things through the House, but he will give the people, as well as members of Parliament, ample time to consider the significance of all proposed legislation. The Labour . Cabinet will meet on Saturday morning.
