R.S.A. SYMPATHY
WREATH FROM N.Z. [Per Press , Association.—Copyright] WELLINGTON, This Day. The late Earl Jellicoe was the successor of Earl Haigh.es president of the Empire Service League, of which the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association is a foundation member. The Hon. W. Perry, Dominion President of the R.S.A., has sent the following cable to the Empire headquarters of the British Empire Service League:—
“Kindly express to Countess Jellicoe and family pur deepest, sympathy, and obtain a wreath on behalf of the ex-servicemen of this Dominion.”
Mr Perry also nominated Mr B. H. T. Drew to represent the New Zealand Association at the funeral. In a letter to Empire headquarters, Mr Perry says: “During his period as GovernorGeneral of New Zealand his interest was ever with our people,, and. especially with those who had rendered service in the defence of our . Empire. The memory of' Earl and Countess Jellicoe is enshrined in the hearts of all. He was 1 the bearer of this association’s highest honour, the gold badge, and, by his never-flagging interest in the welfare of ex-service-men, he was a worthy successor to Earl Haig, founder of the British Empire Service League.
THE KING’S SORROW A NOTABLE TRIBUTE [British Official Wireless .] RUGBY, November 22. The King and Queen yesterday sent a telegram of sympathy to Countess Jellicoe, and a Court Circular issued from Buckingham Palace contained the following notable tribute by the King in the memory of Earl Jellicoe: “The King has learned with profound, sorrow of the death of the Admiral of the Fleet, Earl Jellicoe, who will for all time be remembered as commander pf the Grand Fleet during the long and critical period of the War. The King knows that the loss of this great seaman will be deeply felt throughout -the whole Empire, and not least by the people of New Zealand, by the Royal Navy, and by ex-service-men, whose confidence and affection he quickly won by his* devotion to their welfare,”
The Archbishop of Canterbury will take part in the funeral service on Monday at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The Prince of Wales will represent the King at the ceremony.
AUCKLAND MEMORIAL SERVICE [Special to “Northern Advocate .”] AUCKLAND, This Day. A special yatchmen’g memorial service fcr the late Lord Jellicoe will be conducted by the Rev. Jasper Colder at the Epiphany Church, Newton, tomorrow evening. An invitation to attend has been extended to the flag officers of the various yachts and boating clubs of Auckland. On Monday morning, at 9.30 in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Parnell, a memorial service to the late Earl Jellicoe of Scapa, is to be held. The preacher will be His Grace Archbishop Averill. All civic, military, naval and social organisations are invited to attend.
