FLIER RETURNS
A WHANGAREI PILOT FIVE YEARS WITH R.A.F. [Special to “Northern Advocate ”1 AUCKLAND, This Day. A crash which caused him to spend six months in hospital has not lessened the enthusiasm for the Royal Air Force of Flying-Officer D. W. Morrish,of Whangarei, who arrived back in Auckland by the Marama this morning, after nearly six. years with the R.A.F. In January, 1930, Flying-Officer Morrish left Whangarei,' where he had been on the staff of the “Northern Advocate” and the Bank of New Zealand. He joined No. 3 Flying Training School at Grantham, and while in his senior term he crashed in a heavy fog. He was some distance up when he struck a tree. For a week Mr Morrish was unconscious, but came round at the end of that time, only to lapse into unconsciousness for another week. He recovered slowly, and was later sent to the King Edward VII Convalescent Homo for officers. Passed medically fit after a few more weeks, he returned to his squadron and flew again. When the crash happened Mr Morrish was flying an Armstrong Whitworth Atlas. In the latter part of his training, Mr Morrish went through a special autogiro course. He was for a time adjutant at the School of Army Cooperation. On one occasion he met Lawrence of Arabia at the Calshot Air Base, when “Shaw" was doing special work on speed boats. Now Flying-Officer Morrish is back in New Zealand for good. He has various ideas, but he proposes to look around a bit and see how the land lies.
