MAJOR DISASTER
WEST INDIES HURRICANE MANY LIVES REPORTED LOST (Received 10.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, October 27. A message from Port au Prince, Haiti, says belated reports from _ remote sections of the island indicate that a major disaster resulted as the aftermath of the tropical hurricane which last week caused considerable damage in Cuba and Jamaica. Many people are reported to have been drowned in the towns of Jacmel and Jeremi, after heavy rain. Indications are that the total deaths may exceed 1000. Communications with the stricken areas are still broken. The Government is rushing relief. It is reported that thousands of people are homeless, suffering from exposure and hunger. Crops were seriously damaged. An airman reports that on the Southern Peninsula, which has been isolated since Monday, there was heavy loss of life. The bodies of 96 people were recovered at Jacmel.
