PROTECTION FROM AERIALr * ATTACK.
A number of scientists in Britain, recently issued through the National Peace Council a : document stating that all practicable precautions against bombihg from the air must be inadequate, and therefore it is practically futile and psychologically .dangerous to organise any precautions at all. The only hope, it was said, lies in the complete abolition of bombing and of bombing aircraft; and the signatories denounce the Government for having, as they alleged, accepted the view that the only effective form of defence is reprisals and for having thereby increased the fears of air attacks in Western Europe. Referring to the manifesto “The Times” says: “Even the scientific side of this argument is questionable. The precautions suggested by the Government have at least the backing of some respectable scientific talent, and it is impossible to shelter the entire are based upon the view that though civilian population from direct hifs, damage and casualties can be circumscribed by the kind of precautions and organisation which are suggested. This view sounds- more like common sense than the argument that because everything cannot be done, nothing should be done. It may well be true that it is impossible to prevent fire altogether short of abolishing matches and thunderstorms, but that is no argument for refusing to maintain a fire brigade.” <S> <s> ■s> f> Words of Wisdom'.
