GANGSTERS AT WAR

DEATH OF “DUTCH SCHULTZ.” SERIOUS FIGHTING EXPECTED. (Received 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, October 24. The murder of Louis Amberg, in Brooklyn, yesterday, seems to have been a signal for a wild outburst of gang shootings. Late in the evening, Arthur Flegenheimer, known as “Dutch Schultz,” a notorious gang leader, was attacked by rival gangsters while he was sitting with three companions in a tavern at Newark, New Jersey. Schultz died in the Newark Hospital. He was a Roman Catholic, and the last rites were administered before he expired. Two of his tavern companions also died, and the two who were shot in the “Times” Square district are in a very grave condition. The police anticipate that there will be even more intense gang warfare owing to Schultz’s death. They say a newly organised gang, with four wellknown figures from the underworld as leaders, has opened a ruthless campaign to annihilate both the Schultz and the Amberg gangs, and seize their lucrative racket. Schultz became a millionaire at the age of 34 by the manufacture of beer during the prohibition era. The police listened to what he said in his delirium, . obtaining information which they were never able to obtain from him while he was conscious. Schultz continually babbled the words “Unione Siciliano,” which are those of a notorious Sicilian gang, also the name oi “Luciano,” who is one of his companions - iMJ.diilii
