Hakaru

A meeting of the Hakaru United Women’s Institute was held in tjie Hakaru Hall on Wednesday Mrs Wintle presided over a good attendance of members; Miss Joan Hall gave a'demonstration of fretwork and Sowed some very nice specimens. Miss Eve Bagnall gave a d. 6 ™ 0 * s*-®" 5 *-®" lion on basketmaking, showing different styles and stages of the work There was a very good display of handiwork. A. letter of thanks for stamps, was read from the Manurewa Children’s Home. Mrs Mayes won the competition for the four largest hen eggs. The hostesses appointed for the afternoon were Mrs Mason, Mrs Hastie and Miss Hastie.

Kaikohe

The monthly meeting of the Kaikohe Women’s Institute was held last Thursday at Mrs P. Melvin Williams’ residence. Mrs Williams gave a demonstration of pen painting, which created a great deal of interest. After-, noon tea was provided by the Arts and Crafts Committee. ) „

Kara

The Kara Institute held its monthly meeting in the hall on October 17, Mrs Millar presiding. The motto for the month was: “There is no wealth'like the heart’s wealth —content,” and the roll-call was “Suggestions for future roll-calls.” Mrs Millar gave an interesting demonstration of picture-mak-ing with tinsel paper. The hostesses for'the day were Mrs Dent and Misses J. McKinley and E. Attwood. The competition: “An article made from two old stockings,” resulted as follows; Mrs Courtney, a child’s jumper, 1; Miss J. McKinley, a quaint Mickey Mouse, 2; Mrs Millar, a tea cosy, 3. These articles were handed over to the delegates to be entered in the Federation Council competition. • «

Maunu

■ A pleasant afternoon was spent at the residence of Mrs J. I. Wilson, when the Maunu Institute held their October meeting. Mjrs Dorehill presided over a good , attendance. The meeting opened with the Institute song. Mfs Hayward and Mrs H. Hawkin were appointed delegates to the council meeting. Mrs Hdrington gave an interesting talk on rock gardens, afterwards distributing plants among the members, - The points competition for a plate of biscuits was won by Mrs H. Hawkins, with, Mrs C. Millington second, and Miss Carter third. Another competition which caused a good deal of amusement, was won by Miss McCarroll. The roll-call: “Suggestions for future meetings,” brought forth many ideas. A vote of thanks was given to Mrs Harington and to the, hostess, Mrs J. I. Wilsom

Omrahi

The first birthday of the Onerahi Women’s Institute took place in the Onerahi Town Hall on October 12, this taking the form of a social and dance, which was of a highly successful nature. Items were given by Mesdames Whimp, Hodgson and Cartwright; each having to respond. The accompaniste was Mrs Edmonds. The cake, made and decorated by Mrs Balleagh, an Institute member, was cut and handed round. Mrs J. Mason (president) wished the Institute a joyous birthday, and prosperity in! the future. On October 22, about 20 ladies attended the group meeting held at Parua Bay. Mrs Edmonds and Mrs Robert Going acted as delegates for Onerahi. The meeting was a grea't success, all present showing by their friendliness and co-operation that' a group was desirable, and members look forward to a happy time in the future. ■ A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Brown for her helpful words, also to the, hostesses, for afternoon tea.

Waikiekie

—. ■ \ ■ / Much business was done at the Waikiekie Institute meeting, and it was decided to give the children of both districts a fancy dress party in December, and a bran tub. The competition for guessing the correct weight of the" committee was won by Mrs E. Gunson, with Mrs N. Sloane second. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Hilford and Cubitt.

Marohemo

The monthly meeting of the hemo Institute was held in the Marohemo Hall. A reading by Mrs Heatley, on “Humour at the Organ Stool, was enjoyed by all. The written competition was won by Mrs Heatley, Miss Trewin and Miss Trinnear tying for second place. The clothes-peg competition was won by Miss P. Hellier, Mrs Morgan being second. The arts and crafts competition was won by Miss V. Hellier, with Mrs Goulsbro second. The- stamp collecting competition was won by Miss V. Hellier, with 2370 stamps, Mrs Fergus being second with 2228 stamps. Afternoon
