PIG-RAISING

.A GROWING INDUSTRY THE WHEAT POSITION SERIOUS. [Special to “Northern Advocate.”) AUCKLAND, This' ‘Day. : The expansion ■■ of the pig raising industry in New Zealand is likely to have a serious effect on the grain and me.al: market, according to the expressed opinion of an Auckland grain merchant. If the expansion continues, he said, there would be heavy demands on grain and meal. It seemed quite certain, .therefore,'- that unless produc-tion-.costs- were reduced and production Tricreased Australia would be able to |ind. a ready market in this country. Increased, attention to the pig raising industry -had been given in the past four; years, he said, and,,, in order to meet overseas competition; the methods of feeding; had undergone changes. The producers; had to raise a better quality pig, ami’, in consequence, they were relying more on grain and meal. -|The poultry industry was also making a big call on wheat, pollard and maize. ; It had grown into a very ’healthy industry, and, with the efforts that were being made to work up an export trade there was likely to be further expansion. Again production costs were important, as the Australian poultry producer, situated in the midst , of wheat country, had a big-advantage over the local producer.

Dealing with the present position With its aspect of : heavy importation in grains and meals, the merchant said that the reason was not far to seek. The South Island had suffered a very dry qutumn. and this had been followed by a dry winter. The immediate result had been an interference with yields especially of oats and a shortage of; feed. ;
