FOR THE BAY SEAT
MR CAMERON’S CAMPAIGN MEETING AT MANGAKAHIA. Mr Clive Cameron, National Government candidate for the Bay of Islands, commenced a vigorous campaign on Monday. The candidate is handicapped, inso far that ten days ago he had no possible thought of contesting a Parliamentary seat. On the other hand, however, the opinion is strongly felt in the North that Mr Cameron has excellent prospects of winning ' the seat.
The candidate commenced his campaign in the Awarua district, and the first meeting was held in Opoutiki Hall, where a very representative gathering of settlers and their wives was present. The candidate confined himself mainly to the history of events leading up to the formation of the Coalition Government, and to measures taken to reduce costs and increase receipts, legislation affecting the primary producers, and the results obtained.
The same lines were taken at Parakao, Pakotai, Purua and Titoki, and Mr Cameron has created the impression that he understands the farmers’ difficulties, and while not agreeing with the present methods of administration in some departments, is confident that only by allowing the Government to continue the process of rehabilitation, will sound Government be maintained.
Mr Cameron dealt fully with a number of questions at each centre. He received excellent hearings, and at Purua a vote of confidence was carried with few dissentients.
