SMITHFIELD MARKET REPORT Private advices from the Smithfield meat market as at the close of business last week are as follows:—Bank of New Zealand.—Wethers: The market is firmer for lighter weights. Ewes: The market is quiet and unchanged. Lambs: The demand is not as good, owing to higher prices. Quotations: Wethers, light, 4|d to s}d per lb; heavy, 4}d to 4}d; ewes, 2Jd to 3§d; lambs, twos, 7|d to BJd; eights, 8d to B}d; fours, 7}d to 7£d; seconds, 7£d to Ud. The N.Z. Meat Producers’ Board reports:—Lambs: The market continues very firm, with a further advance in prices, due to shortening stocks. Heavy supplies of Home killed are affecting the demand. Mutton: The market for lightweight wethers 1 is firmer. Others remain steady and unchanged. There has been more inquiry for lightweight ewes, and prices advanced slightly. Frozen beef: With more inquiry, prices have slightly improved. New Zealand porkers: The market is steady, but trade is slow, owing to unfavourable weather.
