SUCCESSFUL AWANUI TOURNEY j HOW THE MATCHES WENT. I The Awanui Boxing and Wrestling I Association’s second tournament was held in Evans’ Hall, Awanui, on Fri--1 day night, before a packed house. The bouts were keenly contested and showed a great improvement on the first tournament. Wrestling. 1 J. Borovich (10st.) beat H. Dean (10.12) by two straight falls in a good bout. " ,■ • B. Ling (12.7, Broadwood) beat W. Young (12.6, Kaikohe) by falls in the two last rounds. P. Clark (12.0, Kaikohe) beat W, Reid (13.0, Broadwood), by a submission fgll obtained from a head scissors and arm bar in the last round. D. Newman (11.7, Broadwood) beat K. Bourk (11.0, Waimamaku) by two straight falls. L. Hornell (10.5, Broadwood), beat “Dynamite Jim” (10.10), by one fall in a great bout in which Hornell took a lucky fall with a semi-cradle in the first round. C. McNillan (10.0, Waimamaku), beat J.‘Mulcahy (10.0, Broadwood), by one fall with a body press in the last round. B. Ling (11.7, Broadwood) drew with B. Anderson (11.3, Broadwood), after a burlesque wrestling exhibition in which the referee was also involved. S. Gibbs (11.7, Awanui) drew with H. Johnson ‘ (11.7, ex-middleweight champion of New Zealand) after a good exhibition bout, a fall going to Gibbs in the second round with a bod# press, and one to Johnson in the last with a cross buttock. [ Boxing. T. Sturmfels (9.4, Kaitaia) drew with T. Maria (Awanui). W. Skippe (11.0, Ohaeawai) -beat W. James (11.0, Herekino) in a bout characterised by wild swinging and hard hitting, the gong saving James from a knockout in the last round. F. Temoko (14.0, Taheke) beat F; Ford "(Awanui) on points. Ford gave away a lot of weight,, but boxed well against a heavier opponent, and was unlucky hot to get the decision., R. Pook (11.7, Takahiwai) beat N Peters (12.3, Kaitaia) on points. Pook outboxed his opponent in the first two rounds easily. J. Beard (10.1, Awanui) beat M. Gallagher (10.2, Awanui), on points. I C. Hutley (11.4, Awanui) beat M. Ormsby (11.4) on points. P. Harding (11.11, Waima) drew with H, Yates \ 11.4, Awanui). B. Werner (11.4, Kaitaia) drew with H. Ballantyne (11.4, Kaikohe). Werner did well against a more experienced opponent, G. Freer (13.6, Kaitaia) beat W., Clarke (13.6, Waima), on points.. Freer Was too scientific and used his long reach to good effect. - The referee for the wrestling was Mir G. Banton, and for the boxing, Mr Morfette.
