OBITUARY
MRS H. W. WILKES. [Special to “ Northern . Advocate AUCKLAND, This Day. Mrs Hephzibar Wilson Wilkes, of 23 Richmqnd Road, Ponsonby, died yesterday at the age of 96 years. Mrs Wilkes came to New Zealand with her husband and two young children with the Albertland settlers about 1863, and was one of the few surviving Albertlanders. When they arrived at Paparoa, Mr and Mrs Wilkes only remained a few days, going on to Auckland, where Mr Wilkes secured a position in the watch-making trade. After a few months Mr Wilkes established a watch-making business in Auckland and Thames, being in Thames at the time of the main gold rush.
Mr Wilkes died over 30 years ago, and six sons and six daughters have died. Mrs Wilkes is survived by two sons. Messrs A. Wilkes and W. Wilkes, of Silverdale, and one daughter, Mrs E. Hefford, of Ponsonby. There are eight grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. Wing-Commander T. M. Wilkes, director of Civil Aviation, is a grandchild.
