“IN A JOCULAR MOOD”
KISSED GIRL IN RAILWAY CARRIAGE YOUNG MAN FINED £5 “I was in a jocular mood and did hot mean any offence. If I had been sober I am sure I would not have been here.” This was the .explanation given by Archibald Roy Leslie, who appeared at the Whangarei Police Court this morning, charged with behaving in a disorderly manner on the railway, to - the annoyance of others; He was also charged with assaulting a girl in a railway carriage between Whangarei and Portland. ...Leslie pleaded guilty under extenuating circumstances. ' Senior-Sergeant Finch said' that accused was travelling in the railway coach in which there was; a High School girl who was, nursing a small child; Accused kissed the child, and asked to have the infant to hold. The girl refused, and accused thqn kissed; her. He prevented the girl from telling the guard. Later in, the journey accused struck two men. He was under the influence of liquor. Leslie said he had not been away from his work for two months and there would have been no offence if he had been sober. Mr J. G. L. Hewitt imposed a fine of £5 on the assault charge. On the other he was convicted and discharged. Two weeks were allowed for payment.
