RACQUETS OUT

TENNES CLUB OPENS. LAST SATURDAY’S FUNCTION. No less than six neighbouring clubs, including Hora Hora, Kauri and Whakapara, were represented at me opening of the Hikurangi Tennis Club’s courts for the 1935-36 season las Saturday afternoon. Perfect weather favoured the occasion which augured well for a very successful year. The club president, Mr R. Young, officially declared the courts open and Mrs Young served the first ball. Friendly matches were played. Previously the three chip courts have been laid down facing east west, but owing to the angle of the afternoon sun and the consequent inconvenience to players, the club, during the winter, had the playing areas marked out in a north-south direction. Favourable comment on the improvement effected has been made. The club’s membership is being maintained, and, as usual, a keen tussle is assured for the top positions on the ladders. Miss M. Berghan and Mr C. Hamilton headed the lists last year.
