SECOND ANNUAL MEETING AN INSPIRING RECORD. 1 Mr G. Seed presided over a good attendance of parents and friends at the second annual meeting of the Ist r Hora Hora Boy Scouts’ Group, held in . the Hora Hora School, i j The second annual report showed i the Group to be in a very satisfactory , position. The Group was very fortun- \ ate in that it still had the services of 1 i Mrs A. Sharman as Lady Cubmaster j and of Mr G. W. Sharman as Assistant I Scoutmaster. Mrs Sharman had been s responsible in a large measure for j, placing the Group in the fine position it occupied today, r “She is,” the report stated, “an, 2 ardent worker in the Scout movement. A.S.M. Sharman has proved a zealous officer and willing at all times to renr der all assistance to the committee, s Both these officers attended, at their own expense, the Melbourne Scout e Jamboree and the knowledge gained - there is proving’of great assistance.” The Group was unfortunate in losing 3 the services of Group Scoutmaster H. - Seddon Hills. Congratulations were extended to him in his appointment as - District Commissioner. 1 The balance-sheet showed a credit - balance of £2 5s 4d. With the conc tinned progress, camp gear, a trek 8 cart, and quite a number of major items of gear are required, and in :, order to augment the funds the coms mittee appealed to all having the welf fare of the boys at heart to join up as honorary members and thereby give 3 their financial, as well as moral sup- * port. 8 The two officers still working l - lone-handed and the committee ap--3 pealed for'persons willing to act as assistants to join up and so lighten ’ their labours. * Thanks were recorded of the ser--2 vices of the instructors and examin--3 ers; the Mayor and Borough. Coun--2 cil for helpful co-operation; the Hora Hora School Committee for the use of 2 a meeting room; to Mr G. A ( Bethell, 2 for acting as auditor; and to the par- : ents and friends who have so loyally r supported the Group on all occasions. In moving the adoption of the report, ' the chairman expressed the committee’s appreciation of the efficient and self-sacrificing work of the officers. It ’ was also gratifying that the committee ; was able to show a small credit bal- ; ance. I Lady Cubmaster’s Report. : Twenty-four parades, have been held I since Christmas, and have been well * attended, the average being 22. The 1 boys are keen and are making good ! progress. The roll stands at one officer 1 and 35 Cubs (12 second gtar, 12 first ! star and 11 Tenderpads). Badges were ' earned as follows:—Swimmers, 17; collectors,. 14; observers, 8; artists, 7; | homecraft, 1; toymak,er, 1. 1 Several hikes and nature studies 1 have been enjoyed. In May the King’s Jubilee was celebrated by the planting t ; of native trees in Hora Hora Park, and ; the lighting of a campfire in the evening. This latter event was well attend- [ ed by parents and friends. ! ..On the Saturday; , following Arbor * Day, a rimu was planted. At the AnzacDay service, 15 Cubs marched | in the parade, and a wreath was placed ' on .the War Memorial. There was a full parade to form a guard of honour Ton the Governor-General at the Winter Show. The Cub pence for the year amounted to £4 5s 3d. Troop’s Activities. A.S.M. G. W. Sharman presented his report of the working of the Scout Troop as< follows:—During the year 40 parades were held with an average attendance of 60 per cent. In addition one three-day and two week-end camps were held; as well as numerous hikes. The roll stands at one officer, 14 second class Scouts, 6 .Tenderfeet and 2 recruits. Badges gained during the year were: Swimmers, 6; basketworker, 4; rescuer, 4; handyman, 2; reader, 2; metalworker, 1; artist, 1; and leather worker 1. The Troop was again successful in winning the Scout Law Shield competition, conducted by the District Committee. In addition, three boys wort special prizes. The Troop also competed for, and annexed; the Legion of Frontiersmen’s Life-saving Shield. This was open to all troops in the Auckland Prdvince. Week-ends were spent in excavating a stump ' and levelling .an area of ground near the den for a campfire circle. A flagpole was erected and a triangle of shrubs planted; while trees and tree ferns were • planted behind the den and round the campfire circle respectively. The verandah of the den was boarded in, and divided into patrol dens. With the help of the committee the building, was painted. The interior of the structure was lined with box wood kindly donated by Mr Seed. The King’s Jubilee was celebrated by the planting of native trees by the Mayor, Mr W. Jones, and members of the Group, and the preparing and firing of a beacon on Western Hills trig. - *“■ j On Poppy Day the Troop assisted ] the Ex-Servicemen’s Association in the sale of emblems. During Show week the Scouts acted as pickets at the Show. Flowers were collected and sent to Auckland Headquarters for Victoria League Day. Toys were collected on behalf of the Model and Engineering Club. Mr H. W. James of the Fire Brigade gave very useful instruction and advice to the Troop during Fire Prevention Week, and the thanks of the Scouts were extended to him. - The Scout pence amounted to £5 Is. The work was advanced to First Class standard and several boys were ready to be examined. The Scout spirit was well maintained, and in the j coming year the Troop should progress | even more than in the past. I Reports Adopted. j Mr J. W. Parkin, in. moving the j, adoption of the reports of the Cub- j master and Assistant Scoutmaster, con- I gratuiated them on the work accom- i j plished. He stated that the true value of their labours could not be estimated from the credit balance as shown in I , the balance-sheet. In that respect it was | very gratifying to note that the Scouts j had again, won the shield for know- | < ledge of the Scout Law. which was ! the basis of the Scout movement.
