WHANGAREI CRICKET CHAMPS. THE TEAMS REVIEWED STRENGTHS AUGMENTED. During the last two years the number of teams taking part in the Whangarei Cricket championships have doubled, and tomorrow, when the 1935-36 season opens, 16 elevens will step into the field. Much interest will attach to tomorrow’s performances, as much new blood has been infused by the adoption of the week-end half-day, and the grafting of several Thursday players into the ranks. Whangarei Strong.

Whangarei, triple champions, are Setting out to defend the senior title with a particularly well equipped team. Woodrow Wilson and his tried band will have the assistance of Angelo, a leading batsman in the Thursday competition, Renten, from New Plymouth, who shaped convincingly in the latter part of last season, and several others. They will probably meet their stiffest opposition from Combined Services, who will again be led by G. L. Weir. Batten, who made a century here a few seasons ago, Wallace, a polished batsman, and liter in the season, Garland, who comes under the same category, will be available. The team is not particularly well off for bowlers, however, and may have difficulty in forcing wins when in a good position. Nomads’ Bowling Strength. Nomads, their opponents tomorrow, are, in comparison, a team of bowlers, and, in addition to their regular attack, will have Sundberg, the exNorth Auckland left-hander, and Cormack, who played senior in Wellington. The country teams are depending mainly upon their old hands, Maungakaramea have a very serviceable side, but shortage of farm labour may keep several of their best men out of the game. Onerahi, the best fielding team last season, will again be particularly well equipped in this department, and, with several promising youths taking their place in the eleven, should again do well. A determined effort to re-establish the Hikurangi Club has been successful, and the fielding of a regular eleven is assured. With men of the calibre of G. Lawrie available, the team will cause some upsets. High School, led by Falvey, will rely on much the, same team as played in the first term' last season. Transferred from the Thursday competition. Old Boys, who have built up their strength by the inclusion of Pat Bright, W. Williams and Coote, will be making their first bow in,the senior competition. Junior Teams. Eight junior teams will also fight out the junior honours. Maungatapere are defending the title, and it is evident that theirs will be a hard row to hoe. For their second year of cricket they will have a concrete pitch available. Albion, who won the Thursday competition last season, will be strong challengers. As for the others, performances will be the best guide as to their possibilities. Lovatt’s Mill will have the services of Cunis, an exsenioi;, whose fast bowling may play a big part. Teams for tomorrow are:— • Combined Services Seniors: —Weir, Matthews, Batten, Wilton, Provan, Tapper, Patterson, Wallace, Williams, N. Saul, W. Saul.
