AWAITING REPORT
FURTHER RECLAMATION WORK. SETTLEMENT OF TIDAL LANDS. Pending a report from the local Small Farms Committee, the Minister of Public Works considers it advisable to hold over any further reclamation work on the Whangarei Harbour Board tidal lands. Intimation to this effect was received by the Whangarei Harbour Board today. The board had inquired whether thedepartment intended to proceed with the stop-banking of an area of 900 acres on the southern side of the Whangarei Harbour, An analysis of the soil conducted by the Agricultural Department had indicated high productive value, and, the suggestion had been made that, after drainage, thq area should be divided into small holdings of about 25 acres each. The Minister, in his reply, pointed out that several tenants were already established on reclamation land near Whangarei, and when the progress was reported upon the department would be in a position to determine whether further work of this nature would' be justified. Board members today expressed the hope that the Small Farms Committee, which had been delayed in making its report, would do so at an early date.
