GLIDING. Referring to gliding contests at Sutton Bank. “The Times” says: “In recent years there has been some remarkable soaring. Flights across country of over 300 miles have been made. Altitudes of nearly 9000 feet have been reached. The glider wel-
comes weather which the aeroplane pilot would hate, and his best-achieve-ment, done over the cold front which usually precedes a thunderstorm, is perhaps the nearest man has yet come to riding the storm. Most of the British gliding records at present are | far behind those set up by gliders.on ithe Continent. The distance record, stands at only 98 miles; the duration [record at twelve hours twenty-one j minutes, but the altitude record! made in the course of last year’s com- I petitions at Sutton Bank fell short j of the world record by only 170 feet. The pilot who made that record is taking to Sutton Bank this year a hew sailplane of his own design; It is of a speed intended to help the run from one area of upward currents to the next in the fascinating game of aerial hopscotch which is incidental to the gaining of altitude. The sport has irresistible charms for its devotees. Those who will be. launched over the edge of the 600-foot bluff at Sutton Bank will be chiefly young men who jhave tasted the delights of controlled flights in conditions in which the motive power costs nothing, the peace is unbroken, and success is the reward of their own skill. -s><«> <S> <S> Words of Wisdom.
