SEX OFFENCES

CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN STRONGER MEASURES WANTED [From Our Parliamentary Special .] • WELLINGTON, This Day. In a recent ease at Napier,’where a sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment was imposed for obscene exposure in the presence of children, the presiding judge is reported to have said: “If it were allowed me to give the prisoner a larger punishment T would give it to him, but 12 months is the limit.” This case was referred to in the House of Representatives last night by Mr. W. E. Barnard (Labour—Napier), who gave notice to ask the Minister of Justice whether, in view of an apparent recent increase in sexual offences in Hawke’s Bay affecting children, and the public disquiet caused thereby, he would review the scale of punishment for this class of offence.
