SIX KILLED
COLLISION AT SEA. HEAD-ON SMASH. NAPIER STAR INVOLVED. 4 (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, August 18. Six seamen were killed and five injured when a vessel collided at ? night with the Napier Star, 50 miles from Liverpool. The Laurentic was sailing from Liverpool, with 622 passengers, for a cruise of northern capitals. The Napier Star was from Glasgow going to Liverpool, her last port of call, before sailing for Nexy Zealand. The vessels collided bow to bow, and were both docked at Liverpool. The Napier Star's bows were smashed in 20ft, the forecastle house demolish-, ed. No one was injured, as the crelv slept aft. The Laurentic has a hole in one side, exposing the bunk in which the sleeping members of the crew were killed. The vessel’s passengers went home, from the dock, after less than 24 hours aboard. Officers of the Laurentic pay a tribute to the calmness of the passengers, most of whom had retired for the night when the collision occurred. Fortunately the Laurentic was damaged on the side where comparatively few of the crew were quartered. Some occupants of the damaged cabin were killed outright, while their room-mates escaped injury. Thousands witnessed the arrival of the damaged vessels at Liverpool, where they arrived under their own steam, and in brilliant sunshine.
