In the semi-finals, Shields beat Parker, 6 —3, 6 —3, 6—4, and Budge beat y Grant, B—6, 6—4, 6—l. Budge won the final, defeating Shield, 6—3, 5—7, 3—6, B—6, 6—l. Mrs Wills-Moody announced at San Francisco today that she will not play in the national championships at Forest Hills. The tournament at Wimbledon and the journey to England and back was ah effort, and another trip’ is more than ..she feels able to undertake at present. The Wightman Cup was'retained by the United States’ in. the. match against Britain. , Today Mrs. Palfrey-Fabyan -CU.S.) defeated Miss Helen Mudford King, 6—o, 6—3; Miss Jacobs (U-S.) defeated Miss Round. 6—3, 6— 2; . Mrs Arnold defeated Miss Stammers, 6 —2, I—6, ■ 6—3. In the doubles Miss Jacobs and Mrs Palfrey-Fabyan beat Misses Stammers and James, 6—3, 6 —2. Misses Dearman and Nancy Lyle (Britain) beat Misses Caroline Babcock and Dorothy Andrus, 3—6, 6—4, 6—l.
