WORLD’S SMALLEST ’PLANE FLIGHT ACROSS CHANNEL. A WAIST-HIGH MACHINE. [United Press Association —By Electric Tele gray h.—C opy right. ] (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, August 14. The “Flying Flea,” the world’s smallest aeroplane, crossed the Channel from Calais to Lympne in 52 minutes. It was piloted by the designer, M. Henri Mignet, who says it cost less than £7O. The machine' has a wing span of 12ft., and a 20 h.p,, 2-stroke engine. It is only waist high. LORD ROTHERMERE’S GIFT. (Received 10 a.m) LONDON, August 14. The British Government has accepted a gift from Viscount Rothermere of a new type of aeroplane, which the “Daily Mail” has named ‘.‘Britain First.” It was specially constructed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company at Lord Rothermere’s expense. The machine has two Bristol Mercury engines of 645 h.p. each. It will fly 260 m.p.h., carrying eight passengers, and has a cruising speed of 230 m.p.h., at which it has a range of 750 miles. Prolonged tests have satisfied the Aim Ministry and the R.A.F. of the machine’s suitability for military purposes.
