HIGH COMMISSIONER
BRITISH APPOINTMENT, [British Official Wireless .] (Received 1 p.m.) RUGBY, August 14. The British Government decided to appoint a High Commissioner in Australia with functions comparable to High Commissioners in Canada and South Africa. Sir Geoffrey Granville Whiskard, Assistant Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs has been selected as the first High Commissioner and will leave England for Canberra early next year to take up his post. The “Daily Telegraph” says there is no intention of appointing a similar officer to New Zealand, where the Government wishes to retain the system whereby the Governor-General represents the British Government in addition to the King, despite the constitutional changes approved by the Imperial Conference, of 1926.
