DEATH OF SIR WILLIAM WATSON
FAMOUS BRITISH POET. (Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, August 13. Sir William was the oldest living English poet. He was a friend of Tennyson, and was three times unsuccessful when considered a likely candidate for the Poet Laureateship. Tributes are paid to his genius, but his work never obtained popular recognition. Five years ago Sir William was the recipient of a gift of £4,000, subscribed in England and the U.S., as the result of an appeal sponsored by many well-known writers, including Sir James Barrie, Mr John Galsworthy, Mr Bernard Shaw and Dean Inge.
