“NOT WARRANTED”

DAILY RAIL SERVICE. LOSS ON BRANCH LINE. DARGAVILLE REQUEST FAILS. {Special to “Norinern Advocate.”! DARGAVILLE, Tins Day. A request made by the Dargaville Chamber of Commerce that a fulltime service during the winter months be run on the Dargaville-Donnelly’s Crossing sceticn of the railway, has been declined by the stationmaster in charge, Mr A. L. Shand, who points out that the freight and traffic does not warrant a daily service during the winter, and heavy additional expenditure would be incurred, with no prospects of increased revenue. During the last four years the accumulated operating loss amounted to £8,054, but last year the loss was only £B9B. This was accounted for by the fact that there was abnormal metal and log traffic; the former was nonrecurring, and the latter likely to become less each year. The bulk of the traffic offering was seasonal, and he could see no prospects of its picking up in the near future.
