“RATTLED HOME”

A RACING PROBLEM SUBSTITUTE FOR WHIP. STEWARDS TO DECIDE. (Regeived 10 a.m.) LONDON, August 13. The .rattle which formerly urged the racehorse Bally Scanlon to victory has reappeared with portentous sequences, says the “Daily Mail.” A trainer, H. Hedges, finding a. horse named Speed On difficult to persuade to give of his best when racing, bethought himself of Bally Scanlon s rattle, which he had kept as a memento. Its use resulted in Speed On winning a race at Folkestone in a canter. After the race the stewards summoned Hedges and questioned the legality of the rattle. Hedges pointed out that the jockey was permitted to carry a whip, or a substitute for one, and a rattle was more humane than a whip. Hickey, Speed On’s jockey, was called in, and gave a demonstration with the rattle. The stewards smiled, but decided to submit the problem and the rattle to the Jockey Club stewards. Meanwhile Hedges has sent a letter to the Jockey Club pleading for the return of the rattle owing to its sentimental value.
