A RIVER

(Prize-winning entry by Trevor Port, 25 Te Mai Poad. Whangarei. Age 14.) I’m a tiri’y drop of water Fallen from the sky, I grow a little larger As time goes by. I bicker down a valley To join another one. I make a sudden sally Shoot out into the sun. My face is kissed by fern And other vegetation. I lake a sudden turn And fall in feathery formation Into the vale beneath. I meet: a bigger brother And to him I bequeath My waters rent, asunder By nature’s rocky teeth. My speed becomes much slower. 1 reach the plain beneath And join the sea—my —mother— Beside the town of Leith.
