LEAGUE FOOTBALL
PORTLAND’S SHORT SEASON. PLAYERS NOW UNAVAILABLE. The 1935 season is completed as far as the Portland junior League dub is concerned. The team recorded a performance of real merit in annexing the championship. From the outset of the series, it was evident that they were a strong force. They quickly developed a combination and had soon established superiority. Kamo offered stout resistance, but it was insufficient to curb Portland’s success. The champions went through the three rounds without loss and registered 179 points to 60 against. For the knockout competition, however, Portland have round themselves without a team. Several of their men have secured positions which preclude them from turning out any more this season, and so the club has declared the year closed. This will be good news to the four other junior teams participating in the knockout, although there is no doubt that Kamo would relish another tussle with their old rivals. Form now points to Kamo being the foremost contender for the honours and this will be a fitting reward for consistent effort. The Portland club have received the Davidson Cup, the championship trophy, the president of the Northland League Mr J. F. Johnson, having presented ’it to Mr L. Scott, the captain, at a club dance.
