TREATMENT OF MANGELS.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Many people don’t know that it is dangerous for animals—particularly male; animals—to eat unripened' mangels, especially the tops. A simi-. lar case to the one you recently reported occurred at Paterangi; Mangels are the best feed for cows and pigs that can be grown, but they can only be safely used after storing, or after the following treatment: Three weeks •before starting to use the mangels, pull and top what is required for, say, a week’s supply. Always keep the supply three weeks ahead requirements if they are to be fed in an open paddock and cart them out as required. Kor pigs, cart up some and pile...- near .the piggery... Cover with, rushes, or fern and a coating of soil to keep them dry. When the Sun becomes' hot, two weeks will do, but .don’t use until the mangels are ripe. The’tops are. Only fit for, ploughing in. I am; etc., WILLIAM WAKE.
