WRESTLING
i BLOMFIELD WINS. I j ! AMERICAN BEATEN. i ' i j THRILLING BOUT. , LSpecial to “Northern Advocate.”] AUCKLAND, This Day. The New Zealand wrestler, Lofty Blomfield, took the decision from Glen Wade, of America, by two falls to one in a spectacular bout staged at fhe Town Hall last evening. Moving at a fast pace from start to finish, the contestants provided a fairly large atendahce with a contest in which there were few dull moments. A good variety of holds was exploited, and the speedy and clever manner in which they were countered drew ready appreciation from the spectators. There was a sensational opening, when within one minute of the first gong, Blomfield took a fall with a dump and body press, after felling Wade with a powerful forearm jolt to the jaw. The American evened in the fourth round with a dump, and appeared likely to secure a win when I he lifted Blomfield high into the air in the fifth x’ound. Anticipating the dump, however, Blomfield took some of the force out of the fall as he hit the mat witlx Wade on top, and quickly rolled over on the American to pin him with a body press. The New Zealander showed a de-
sire to use forearm punches to the face and body whenever an apportun- | ity presented, this causing Wade to display occasional resentment and also to retaliate. However, the briskness of the exchanges gave the contestants little opportunity to indulge in excessive rough methods. Blomfield’s weight was announced at 16.6, and that of Wade at 15.10. Mr C. Pollard refereed botli professional and amateur bouts. Wade Wary. Following Blomfield’s immediate success in the first round Wade was wary when he faced his opponent in the second, and he backed away from the New Zealander as the latter essayed further forearm punches. The American came in quickly, however, to catch Blomfield in a standing splits, and subsequently rocked his opponent with a -series of powerful forward hcndlocks, until sobered by a fiying tackle by Blomfield which Just missed. A hcmmierloek almost led Wade into trouble in the third round, but he escaped by circling Blomfield as the latter tried to increase the pressure. Blomfield llatlened Wade with a welltimed hull, and then caused amusement by grabbing the American's ears, in ortler to sway him with a fiying deadlock. There was another vigorous exchange of punches in the fourth round until Blomfield worked into close quarters and commenced rolling Wade with deadlock throws. The latter came back with a flying tackle, however, and lowered Blomfield, and, pursuing his advantage, evened the falls with a press after dumping the New Zealander heavily. Blomfield, lying dazed in the middle of the x’ing, needed attention between the rounds, and, at the commencement of the fifth, Wade endeavoured by means of a series of flying mares, to weaken his opponent. Ho was caught napping, when Blomfield recovered from a dump to take the deciding fall. Amateur Bouts. Featherweights: J. Walsh. 9.3, beat J. Sleath, 9.0, on two straight falls. Catchweights: F.
