Major General Nagata, Director of Military Affairs, has died as the result of an attack by a lieutenant-colonel on his staff, who, after a heated argument, drew his sword and cut down Major-General Nagata. It is .believed the dispute arose over Major-General Nagata’s report on General Hayashi s policy in regard to extreme Nationalist feelings in certain sections of the army. Major-General Nagata was assassinated in his own room at the War Office. Colonel Limi was seriously wounded in attempting to protect his chief. The assailant was arrested, but his name has not been .revealed. The Tokio correspondent of “The Times” reports that the public connects the murder with the recent wholesale changes in army personnel, for the details of which the deceased was officially responsible. Attacks against politicians and officials are no novelty, but this is the first occasion on which an officer has been attacked. This breach of discipline in the army, which prides itself on its loyalty, a most painful impression. It is regarded as proving the necessity of General Hayashi’s drastic changes.
