“HIT AND RUN"
DEAD MAN ON ROAD POLICE SEARCH FAILS. COMPENSATION WILL BE PAID, [Special to “Northern Advocate.’! AUCKLAND, This Day. “It is unfortunate that police inquiries have not traced the driver of the vehicle which knocked down deceased,” said the coroner at an inquest today concerning the death of James Edward Smith, aged 41, of Papatoetoe, who was found on June 7 on the Great South Road, seriously injured beside his smashed bicycle. Counsel for the widow said that there was special provision in such cases for compensation being paid, but it was first necessary to prove that the death was due to being struck by a motor vehicle. “There is no question of that,” said the coroner, who returned a verdict that death was due to gas gangrene, following the deceased being knocked down by a motor vehicle, the driver of which was unidentified.
