MEAT AGREEMENT

MR LYONS WELCOMED AUSTRALIAN APPROVAL GRATIFYING. BRITAIN’S ARGENTINE TREATY. £United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright .] (Received 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 12. The Prime Minister of Australia, Mr J. A. Lyons, was given a tumultous reception at a luncheon of the United Australia Party today. In replying to the speeches Mr Lyons said it had been gratifying to find such wide approval in Australia of the short term meat agreement reached in London, which involved a substantial advance in the volume of the Commonwealth’s meat trade with the United Kingdom. “It would be to the advantage of the Empire,” said Mr Lyons, “if the British Government, in contemplating a renewal of any new agreement with countries in a similar position to Argentina, showed less concern for foreign producers, and more for the great British dominions like Australia. I recognise that the United Kingdom, in making the agreement with Argentina, had no intention of departing from the principle subscribed to at Ottawa.” Mr Lyons described the Argentine agreement as totally inconsistent with the principle of Ottawa, and expressed great confidence that it would not be renewed in its present form. He urged that, at the earliest possible date, Australian meat producers should follow the example of New Zealand producers and set up small but representative meat board control. Trade With United States. After consulting his colleagues, the Prime Minister, Mr Lyons, stated that the Federal Parliament would 'meet on September 24. The “Sun” says Mr Lyons will propose to the Cabinet that Australia make direct representations to the United States for a reduction of the barriers against Australian products. Mr Lyons said this afternoon that there is at the moment a particularly friendly attitude towards Australia in the United States.
