! AUCKLAND GO DOWN | CANTERBURY “THE MYSTERY | SIDE.” jRANFURLY SHIELD BACK AGAIN. A THREE POINT VICTORY. i Special to - frontier,, Advocate.’'i AUCKLAND, This Day. Colourful all the way was the match between Auckland and Canterbury at Eden Park on Saturday afternoon, when the Ranfurly Shield slipped from Auckland’s grasp to find once mere a resting place in the South. Canterbury were called a mystery team, but they arc a mystery team no longer, for on the full run of play their virility and clever collaboration of their backs deserved the victory that came their way. Outstarred, outplayed and outgeneralled all the way through the first half, Auckland, in patches in the second half, played the bright, open anc\ devastating way that is traditional, but the whole side on the daj' was committeed to a dreadful chain of errors, and they certainly did not deserve to win. Within the first minute, a free kick came to Auckland for a scrum infringement and from the twenty-five, wide out, Bush kicked a great goal. Auckland did ’ not hold the lead long. From scrums and line-outs Canterbury were winning the ball and the backs were being fed splendidly on .either side by McAuliffe. Around the blind side flashed Parsons, to race towards the grandstand flank, cut infield, sidestep two men land run into the arms of Bush. As Ihe was tackled he sent the ball to ! Deavoll, who scored. The kick was j disallowed. —3—all. Great Field Goal. A hectic Canterbury attack was countered by a solid Auckland forward movement. The backs got going in attack and Currey short punted to the Canterbury full-back, who attempted to clear. Bush picked up the ball 30 yards out, near the grandstand touch line, and potted a great field goal. Back to attack went Canterbury and within two minutes of Bush’s field goal they had scored. Mortlock made a brilliant opening and Thompson carried on before the Auckland defence had time to cover and dived over for a try which Mortlock had made. Deavoll narrowly missed the kick. Three minutes before half-time Canterbury were over again for a brilliant ti'y. The backs flashed into action from a scrum near half-way and when the ball reached Poison, the centre fended off Neal without difficulty and raced to Bush. Just as he was tackled he sent a splendid infield pass to Rankin, who galloped over behind the posts. Deavoll easily converted and the score at half-time was: Canterbury 11, Auckland 7. Canterbury Too Good. In the middle of a loose, scrappy scramble Frankham picked up and sent Anderson away for Auckland’s first try. With the Canterbury backs hopelessly out of position, he galloped over, Bush missed narrowly. Then, from 40 yards out in front of the posts Bush landed a splendid goal to put Auckland once more in the lead. Canterbury came again and when a forward dropped his pass and a melee started, McAuliffe fed Parsons on the blind side, and with dazzling sidestepping, he shot over the line and round behind the posts. Deavoll converted. The outlook for Auckland was grave. When it seemed all over, a free kick came to Auckland and there was a silence as Bush placed the ball for a kick at goal that would have meant, had it gone over, a drawn game and Auckand’s shield. It was a great effort from near the side-line, twentyfive yards out. The ball sailed high and apparently true, but the two line umpires simultaneously waved their flags to indicate that Auckland had lost the shield. Canterbury 16 Auckland 13 Mr C. F. Pauli was referee.
