LICENSED “BOOKIES”

STRONG PUBLIC DEMAND POLICE AND ILLEGAL BETTING RACING CLUB’S VIEWS [Special to “Northern Advocate "l AUCKLAND, This Day. A just and equitable law- for the relicensing; of bookmakers should be “feasible,” said the president of the Auckland Racing Club, Mr. Oliver Nicholson, in an address at the annual meeting of the club this afternoon. “It must be patent to everyone that the police have quite failed to suppress the bookmaker, who is still further greatly assisted by the broadcasting of running descriptions and race results, as well as by his enjoyment. by devious means, of excellent telegraphic and telephone facilities provided by Government departments,'’ said Mr. Nicholson. While great care would be needed to avoid abuses, it would not be difficult to control a licensed bookmaking system, for which there was a strong public demand.
