MANGONUI WHARF

(To the Editor.) Sir.—lt has come to my knowledge that my name has been mentioned' at the Mangonui County Council chambers and elsewhere in connection, with the opposition to the erection of a new wharf at Mangonui. As Ido not relish being thought to be mixed' up in any way with such a dog in tne manger” scheme, I hereby give this my most emphatic denial. In- laet, I am of the opinion that the council are to be commended! for having decided on a substantial permanent structure, which is always the cheapest in the long run.—l am, etc., G. F. B. WEISS. Mangonui. (To the Editor.) Sir—Mr. Clemetts’ letter on the above makes very interesting reading. I am heartily in agreement with him where he states “It is generally the case that those who have the least stake in the country’s affairs have the most to say.” A perusal of the personnel of the League will show this, for though they are perfectly worthy citizens, only three out of twelve are shippers of produce, the remainder being, mostly retired gentlemen, to whom neither rates nor wharf dues mean any hardship. To my knowledge, no one objects to the erection of a concrete wharf, the objections' being simply to the extravagant proposal. A general view of . the roads in Mangonui township shows the results of past l administration over a period of forty years, for there is not a road or pathway worthy of the name, people within two miles having to pack their goods. Mr. Clemetts’ remarks on selfishness are also well timed, for surely a man is as much entitled to an access road as a few others are to an extravagant wharf to enable them to fish in deeper water. Surely now is the time to reorganise, and, in conjunction with the Main Highways Board, formulate a constructive scheme so as to get the best value for money spent, and a wharf which will meet the requirements of the district.—l am, etc., ERNEST I. NILSSON. Mangonui.
