SATURDAY’S HOCKEY WHANG ARE® COMPETITIONS MANGAPAI DROP A POIN?. With a firm turf and in ideal weather, Whangarei hockdy players continued their championship competitions under the best conditions this season on Saturday. In the men’s section the surprise was at Tauraroa, where Mangapai, one of the three leading teams, could do no more than draw, dropping a point at a most important stage. The position in the ladies’ sections was unchanged, all games going according to expectations. “LOCAL DERBY” DRAW AT TAURAROA Played at Tauraroa, the game between Tauraroa and their neighbours, Mangapai, created a great deal of local interest. Mangapai had a decided advantage during' the first half of the game. W. Ormandy netted the ball on four occasions, two of these shots being disallowed for offside. Owens, in goal, for Tauraroa, was kept busy and made some smart clearances by kicking. Mangapai were a bit unlucky in not scoring more goals. They seemed to have the game well in hand when halftime was signalled, the score being Mangapai 2, Tauraroa nil. Upon: resuming Tauraroa took up the attack and some hard fast play was seen. Within 10 minutes their first goal was registered through McKenzie. Later a breakaway by Rule and Massey from' halfway was successful, Massey scoring from a difficult position. Play from now on was fast and willing. Mangapai striving hard to score, but Tauraroa hit hard upfield to clear. Final score was a draw of two all. Mr. A, J. Magee refereed. UNITED WIN AGAIN. DEFEAT OF RAMBLERS. United, with only ten men, defeated Ramblers by 3 goals to 2 after a hard and even game at Kensington Park. It was only United’s combination which won the battle. This team has an unbeaten record this season to date. From the bully-off, Patterson took the ball to Ramblers’ circle, and shortpassed to Wilson, who was unable to get his shot in. Play swung up and down field, with Fyfe doing good work for United, until Smeal, who was playing well, cleared up the wing to Creamer. He sent in a centre to Patterson, who had a shot, but Franklin saved. It was Ramblers’ turn to attack and Munro and Maddren nearly reached the net, Kelly clearing. United put on another determined attack, the ball coming from Creamer to Wilson, who took it into the circle
and passed to Patterson, who put in a strong shot. Franklin saved, but Patterson, following in, caught the hall on the rebound from the goalie’s pads and scored a good goal.—United 1, Ramblers 0. Ramblers again attacked, and after some good work Munro found the net with a strong shot.—Ramblers 1, United 1. Ramblers kept up the offensive, and from a melee in the goal mouth, Munro netted again.—Ramblers 2, United 2. The pace now became very fast, both sides striving hard for a win. Elliott put in a centre for United, but A. Kelly cleared, to put Ramblers on an attack which was stopped by smeal. Creamer put in a good run down the wing, and centred to Patterson, who was unlucky in putting his shot over the top of the net. United were having the better of the game at this stage, with Patterson and Wilson always prominent. A. Kelly, for Ramblers, was playing a solid game on defence, and Franklin was making no mistakes in goal. From a penalty corner, Wilson again stopped for Patterson to put in a hard shot, but Ramblers cleared and took play to the other end. They were held up by M. Kelly, who, in turn, put United forwards on the attack! After some strenuous play in the circle Robyns scored United’s winning goal just as the whistle blew for time. —United 3, Ramblers 2. Mr S.
