WHANGAREI HOCKEY
COMPETITION GAMES SATURDAY’S PLAY. MOST GROUNDS SOFT. The majority of the grounds were soft after the rain earlier in the week for; the Whangarei Hpckey Association’s competition games on Saturday. There were two drawn games—United and Mata, and Ramblers and Wesley—in the , men’s section,;,, and this now places Maungakaramea and Mangapai at the head of the table, with United a point behind. Massey was the outstanding player oh the' ground. ’ Nt) HALF-TIME SCORE. MANGAPAI’S SECOND-HALF WIN. After holding the game to a scoreless draw in the first half, Whangarei succumbed to the continued pressure of Mangapai and lost the game by 4 ( goals to 1, in a match played at Kensington Park. Some heavy showers passed over during the game, making conditions cold and unpleasant. The first half was very even and both sides> playing without goalkeepers,, had some narrow escapes. In the second spell Mangapai did most of: the attacking and kept Whangarei busy. The rain had ceased when the game commenced at a fast pace. The first stages found both teams struggling for the advantage in mid-field, but Mangapai soon forced their way to Whangarei’s circle. Sloane cleared after some tight work and Whangarei took the ball to the other end where Mangapai were forced to defend keenly. . . , Both sides were attacking in turn, but Mangapai were having the better of the game so far. P. Carter had a shot which Kessell cleared. Primmer and Salmon both cleared well when Mangapai pressed in again. There was some close work and a narrow escape for Whangarei, the ball eventually going dead. Whangarei rushed back and a corner gave them an opportunity. Hewlett stopped well but Sloane’s shot did not get there. . Mangapai were nearly there again a minute later when a sudden thrust found them within shooting distance. The ball just skirted the goal. Whangarei were now having a bigger share of the attack though Mangapai were dangerous and kept them busy. . The ball actually went into the net from a Mangapai rush, but the shot was from outside the circle, and at half-time there was no score.
The second spell opened with a Whangarei attack but the ball went out to Hannam who just could not reach it and Mangapai took it to the opposing goal. A heavy shower passed over at this stage making the conditions most unpleasant. Mangapai were keeping Whangarei in their own half. They opened the scoring soon after as the result of continued pressure Ormandy netting a cleanly.”-hit ball Mangapai 1, Whangarei 0. They nearly scored again but a corner was awarded against them. However, they made up for this when Ormandy had an ; easy shot which found the goal undefended.— Mangapai 2, Whangarei 0. ’ The third came almost immediately after Monk found an easy opening.— Mangapai 3, Whangarei 0. • ■ Whangarei had not been out of their own territory for some time and were mainly defending. Once McKenzie centred for Sloane to have a shot but the bail sailed over the goal. With only a few minutes to go Whangarei took play to Mangapai’s circle and in a struggle for possession Hewlett got his shot in for Whangarei’s first goal—Mangapai 3, Whangarei 1. ' Mangapai collected another before the end, M., Carter being responsible. —Mangapai 4, Whangarei 1. There was’no further alteration when time was called. Mr J. Batchelor refereed.TWO—NIL. MAUNGAKARAMEA v. SPRINGFIELD. Maungakaramea gained the decision over Springfield by 2 goals to nil after a hard-fought game, which however, did not produce much play of interest. At half-time ’Karamea had one goal to their credit. ' Maungakaramea were soon defending, Springfield forcing their way through to call the goal-keeper out to defend. ’Karamea came back with a strong rush and gained a corner, following some hard drives to the goal. The greens were taking the upper hand and kept Springfield on the defensive. The first score came a quarter of an hour after the start when Windley gathered in a neat pass and shot accurately into the net.—Maungakaramea 1, Springfield 0. A period of even play followed with very little bright work and there was no further score when half-time was called. Springfield opened the second spell by J. Palmer running up with a good opening. He lost the ball, however, and ’Karamea again . took up the offensive. Ten minutes later they missed another fine chance and the ’Karamea defence was too sound. The Springfield wings were keeping the inside men well fed and had their fair share of attack. Shortly before time E. Porter added another to Mauhgakaramea’s total and the final score read: Maungakaramea 2, Springfield 0. ANOTHER DRAW. UNITED WERE LUCKY. Playing at Springfield on a wet, slippery ground, United were lucky to share the points with Mata. United were handicapped through Saul being absent. They played one short. Mata were leading three goals to one with only ten minutes to go, and United
evened the score two minutes from the call of time. t L. Price scored all of Mata’s goals, one Of which was a solo effort. Taking the ball half the length of the playing area unchallenged, except by the goalie, who came out too soon, he scored easily. The Mata forwards spoiled many good movements by getting offside. Salmon and Johns were kept busy as backs, and Miller in goal did well. ~ „ , Patterson and Elliott were the goalgetters for United. Patterson netted twice. United’s forwards combined well most of the game. The righ wing was often seen to advantage, Creamer being in good .form. United s defenders were inclined to play too far up. Fyfe played well at centre half, but was inclined to clash with his wing halves, and feed his wing forwards when his centre was unmarked. Patterson, at centre, was thrustful and dangerous when in possession of the ball. Elliott’s equaliser was a good nara shot that beat three defenders before finding the net. At the final whistle Mata were pressing. Mr A. J. Magee was referee. DRAWN GAME. ONE GOAL EACH.
