[Special to “Northern Advocate.”! NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. On Saturday Taranaki defeated Auckland by 31 points to 29. It was not a Ranfurly Shield match. Auckland opened with a strong attack, and within the first five minutes, from a scramble near the posts, Solomon forced his way over for Bush to convert. A loose rush brought Auckland right up to the line for Brown to cross for a try, which Bush did not convert. The visiting forwards broke away, and play was transferred to Taranaki’s twenty-five yards line. Edwards electrified the crowd with a great run of 50 yards, in which he side-stepped two opponents and then short-punted over Bush. A melee ensued, in which Fitzgibbon was caught off-side and Collins landed a good goal. A great move by Taranaki followed. Sullivan broke away and gave the ball to Brown, who raced away, and scored under the post for Collins to add the points, and halftime sounded with the score: —Auckland 11; Taranaki 8. A tight skirmish marked the opening of the second half. Then C. Brown broke clear and gave the ball to Galbraith, who outstripped the opposition, punted over Bush, and raced on for a try. Collins’ kick failed. Auckland responded with a try by Killeen after Grant had made a good opening. Bush missed with an easy kick.

Edwards and O. Brown broke away down the side-line, and when checked by Bush handed to Brown, who went in unopposed near the corner. Collins converted, putting Taranaki in the lead for the first time in the match. Pepperell came up, and with great determination forced his way over with two opponents on him. Collins converted, making the score 21 to 14. Again the home pack charged through in a short passing move, which ended in Young crossing for a try, to which Collins added the extra points. Play was swiftly transferred to the home end, when Edwards corkscrewed his way through and scored under the posts. ~ Collins again converted, making the score 31—14.

A loose rush took place in the open without opposition, when Taranaki were all out of their positions, giving A. Brown another try, which Bush converted. Solomon led the visitors down the Taranaki line, and, from a scrum under the posts, Frankham forced his way over, and Bush again converted.

Excitement was running high, and from 35 yards out Collins failed in a penalty kick at goal. Both sides strove hard in the final stages, but the game ended with Taranaki on the attack, and the score;— Taranaki 31 Auckland 29 Mr O'Sullivan was referee.
