STRUCK BY TRAIN

ELDERLY MAN KILLED.

I Per Press Association.—Copyright.! INVERCARGILL, This Day.

An elderly man, Thomas Menzies, was struck by the Kingsdon-Invercar-gill train as it was drawing into the Lumsden station at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon, and gravely injured. He did not regain consciousness, and died at 6.30.

Mr Menzies was crossing from the business area to the other side of the town by a pathway traversing the railway lines at the northern end of the station when the train drew in. While he was on the railway track the whistle of the locomotive was sounded, and it is believed that he was undecided what to do. He was bending forward as the engine struck him and was thrown on the platform. The train was not going very fast at the time.

Mr Menzies, who was a widower, was one of the oldest residents of die district.
