Bank of New Zealand. —The sales closed firm for all wools. The market for greasy crossbreds is very strong. Current quotations for good average condition:—Greasy merinos, 60-64’s. 15d to 16d per lb; ordinary, 60-84’s, 13£d to 14d; inferior, 60-64’s, lid to lljd; greasy halfbred, 56’s, lid to 12d; 50’s-56’s, 9id to lOd; greasy crossbred, 50’s, 9d to 9id; 48-50’s, Bid to 9d; 46-48’s, 7id to 8d; 44-46’s, 73d to 7id; 40-44’s, 7d to 7Jd; 36-40’s, 63d to 7d.

Loan and Mercantile.

New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd.—As compared with last sale’s closing rates, prices are higher Id to -l|d per lb for greasy merino super, greasy merino medium and fine greasy crossbred; higher Id per lb for greasy merino inferior and medium greasy crossbred; higher id to Id per lb for coarse greasy crossbred; higher id per lb for scoured merino; higher par to id per lb for crossbred slipe and scoured crossbred; about the same for lambs, merino and crossbred. The sales closed with a fairly firtn tone. Competition by both Home and Continental buyers is fairly active.

Based on the Government Statistician’s index number for export prices of wool for the 12 months ended June 30, which is 750, against 1800 for June 30, 1928, the rates of pay for shearers for 1935-36 will be: —

Hand-shearing, not less than 19/6 per 100, with rations; machine shearing, the same; where shearers find for themselves, an extra 5/-; pressers, £2 6/- per week, or 1/4 per hour; other shed hands, £2 1/- per week or 1/2 per hour; cooks, £2 16/- per week, or 10/10 a day.
